Freeport, Illinois – July 16, 2019 – A new Sensory Room exhibit will open on Friday, July 26, following a ribbon cutting ceremony facilitated by the Greater Freeport Partnership at noon.

“All children need encouragement and support. We at CHOM have created a room where adults can provide that for their child,” stated Board President Jessi Larson. “In order to help children with disabilities, we have set up a room that promotes learning to help them help themselves. Our job is not to cure disabilities, but to give children the tools they need to work through challenges.”

This exhibit is unique because there is no other public access facility within a 75 mile radius that offers this type of experience. It will serve children of all abilities ages 1 and up, with a primary focus on, but not limited to, helping children with autism, sensory processing disorder, cerebral palsy, and Down’s syndrome. The equipment will help children with motor planning, balance, fine & gross motor, core strengthening, spatial awareness, and coordination.

The Sensory Room is designed to be an area where children can explore new ways of sensory reception. While the room is open to all children, every child is expected to be closely supervised by an adult at all times so that the children for whom the equipment was designed for can play and learn and grow without disruption.

Admission is free all day for this very special exhibit opening and donations are always welcome. Regular daily admission is $6 per person ages 24 months and up. Annual Family memberships are $80. The Children’s Hands-On Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and could not exist apart from the support of museum-goers and the community.
